The Viking Building at Cranborne |
Volunteers, students and staff have embarked on an ambitious project to build a working reconstruction of a Viking longhouse at The Ancient Technology Centre in Dorset. Following in the footsteps of other timber framing projects at the centre, the intention is to complete the build by Christmas 2008. This project seeks to combine financial support from private and public donors with a volunteer and student workforce to produce a unique residential facility for schools and other educational groups. |

July sees the installation of the last purlins and the first ridge sections of the build. All of these timbers bend along their lengths by precise measurements and ensure that, although the roof curves, the pitch of the rafters will remain constant at 45 degrees. The manufacture of these timbers and their installation are the most complex stage of the whole construction. |
