The Viking Building at Cranborne |

Volunteers, students and staff have embarked on an ambitious project to build a working reconstruction of a Viking longhouse at The Ancient Technology Centre in Dorset. Following in the footsteps of other timber framing projects at the centre, the intention is to complete the build by Christmas 2008. This project seeks to combine financial support from private and public donors with a volunteer and student workforce to produce a unique residential facility for schools and other educational groups. |

The mission for this month is to fit the curved wall plate to the top of the posts. Firstly we surveyed the tops of posts to discover they were inch perfect! The posts were levelled with chainsaws, using a water level to establish a datum. Using a site made jig we then notched the posts to receive the 5”x5” wall plates – the fantastic shape of the building can be seen in the curve of these plates. We have embarked on the manufacture of hundreds of oak pegs for the timber joints. |
